Orx - Portable Game Engine
Uni-code to rule them all?
14 June 2010

Well, that wasn't exactly on the roadmap for 1.2 release, but unicode support has been added to orx.

However orx only supports UTF-8 right now. Latin-1 isn't accepted anymore, so if you want to use ASCII's extended characters (0x80 - 0xFF) you'll now have to encode your files in UTF-8.

Why such a sudden interest for unicode, you might ask?

Well, I've been considering that for a long time actually, and seen the recent increase of interest in orx from east asian users (currently half the downloads originate from China, thanks to JTianLing :)), now was the best time to add it and be able to display non-ASCII texts.

1.2 release will thus have 2 new features concerning texts: custom bitmaps support and UTF-8 support.

I'll update tutorial #10 prior to the release so as to show how both are used.

As Chinese is still unreachable for me, I'll put a Japanese example in the tutorial.

License is back!
02 June 2010

It's been a while since my last post, sorry about that. The 1.2 release is coming along nicely (finally per-object shaders + a nice performance boost!) but that's not the purpose of this post.

Orx is changing its license from LGPL to zlib. This basically means more freedom for users, especially on iPhone.

I'll get more into the details by adding a license page on the website that will explain it all.

The current SVN version is now licensed under zlib, and I'll update all the references after the next release.

For now, if you ever had submitted code to the orx project and you don't agree with the zlib license, please let me know so that I can remove your code from the repository. Hope I won't get flooded by emails. =)

iPhone v1.2 beta released!
11 April 2010

Everything's in the title except for the link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/orx/files/orx/orx%20-%201.2%20(beta)/orx-full-iPhone-1.2-beta.zip/download Cool

Please read the !ReadMe-iPhone.txt file for more details.

The package  contains orx's full source code as well as an iPhone-oriented demo featuring:

  • accelerometer
  • touch interaction
  • physics
  • particles
  • music & sounds
  • dynamic object creation
  • visual FXs

If you find any bug please let us know! Any feedbacks/comments will also be greatly appreciated! Laughing

The only thing missing before a final release is OpenGL ES 2.0 support with custom shader support.

It has been brought to my attention that the LICENSE file in orx's package is an incorrect one.

Orx is currently licensed under LGPL (and NOT GPL) and the LICENSE file will be properly updated in the next release. =)

If you'd like a special licensing scheme so as to modify orx's source without having to publish your modifications, please contact us!
